Raising Awareness with Breast Care

by Katharina Wehrli

In the far distant past all roles within society were valued the same. Therefore, all members were equal in status. Such models of social order allowed for balance, mutual respect, justice, and shared responsibility in the wellbeing of all. What is more, these societies regarded the entire creation as equally relevant and sacred. Women were honored in association with the Goddess and the Earth. Through specific rituals pubescent members were initiated into adulthood. This had a very distinct effect in that it allowed young adults to mature emotionally.

Then a shift occurred during which the main motion of social evolution gravitated toward individualization. People were moving away from a sense of coherence and connectedness. The experience of separation was augmented in all aspects of life. Actions related to the intellect were now considered superior to actions associated with the emotions.

People were no longer capable of living in accordance with their true nature. Most rites of passage lost their communal sense of belonging and organic wholeness. This was consistent with the sense of alienation they fostered. It resulted in a loss of inner security, emotional nurturing, cohesiveness, and maturity that was progressively mirrored in all areas of life.

Celebrating the Goddess within brings these essential qualities back into people’s lives. This also occurs by way of honoring and taking care of the physical body. For women the breasts represent nurturing and caring. Their natural curves are comforting. Their delicate softness invites the warmth of a giving touch.

As the stress of fast paced living becomes ever more acute, the feminine aspect of divinity continues to embrace and protect unconditionally. Self-breast care is an effective way for every woman to stay connected to her natural being. In a time where the female body is on the one hand idealized and on the other hand subject to serious health concerns, self-breast care becomes a means for balance. In its beautiful simplicity it cultivates body, mind, and soul.

Whether sixteen or sixty-five, self-breast care can be practiced during any phase of life. Since it takes no more than ten minutes, it is easily added as a daily ritual even to the busiest schedule. There are many different ways to massage the breasts, all of which are beneficial, particularly if done regularly. It is a centering, calming activity that feels good. During the childbearing years it regulates the menstrual cycle, eases cramps, and promotes the alleviation of breast soreness due to hormonal fluctuations. During menopause it is a stabilizing factor in reducing undesired symptoms, and after menopause it is just as helpful in keeping the breasts healthy.

Any simple self-manipulation technique prevents stagnant tissue from creating blocked ducts or forming calcifications. Some women have also reported that self-breast massage effectively treated and reduced cysts. The sheer fact that the breast tissue is stimulated results in drainage of the glands. Consequently toxins cannot settle. Combine this with the toning and firming effect on the breasts, and you have a thorough workout that requires only a minimal amount of time.

Emotions are related to the production of hormones, especially progesterone and oxytocin. Both these hormones are proven to affect the human organism in positive ways. Progesterone has a calming effect and aids in sleep. Oxytocin is normally produced in lactating women along with another hormone. It may also reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. Self-breast massage stimulates both these hormones.

The nerves in the breasts connect to all the major organs and glands. The breast tissue links to the major organs of the body, while the nipples correlate to the glands. The glands as well as the organs in turn are linked with the subtle human energy anatomy. And the life force runs through this system. Just like the ears, hands, or feet, the breasts reflexively represent the whole body. Massaging the breasts indirectly balances blocked energy channels. This may result in healing of seemingly unrelated ailments.

There is also self-breast care that uses touch, visualization, breath, and sound in combination. The visualizations are linked with the breath and the sounds. The sounds express emotional qualities. Negative feelings are cleared on the out-breath, and positive traits reaffirmed with the in-breath. In this is much room for creativity to tailor the affirmations to one’s specific issues and circumstances. Full attention is given to the movements, breath, sounds, and affirmations.

The beauty of this system lies in the combination of physical and physiological aspects with increasing conscious awareness. In other words, this self-breast care technique is simultaneously also a meditation. When directing the gaze through the brow point, the mental focus is turned inward. Even if no deep ecstatic states result from this, there is still an element of meditative calmness. It trains the mind to pay attention to the subtle realms of existence. This boosts the amount of conscious awareness that can then be used for self-improvement in any area of life.

Real power is found in answers that arise from within. Growing awareness makes us realize our intuitive potential. In combination with self-breast care it cultivates inner radiance. Once we connect to this power, the Goddess can guide us in all that we think, feel and do. She takes care of our body, mind, and soul, because she is in everything.
